Julie and Charles

Julie will be comforted by the amazing memories of her adventures with Charles, globe trotting, always searching out the most beautiful, exotic and interesting places, with the most challenging of walks, climbs and scrambles. She has the photos to prove it. Charles' good looks , energy, enthusiasm and welcoming smile shine out of those photos, as if he's beckoning the viewer in to join the adventure and the fun.

My abiding memory of Charles is that smile and those huge blue eyes, signalling his interest in everything and everyone around him. A bit of a bulldog, once he had seized on an idea he would hold onto it and follow it through. For example....we have a field at the back of our garden, considerably higher than the garden. There used to be a wall separating the two but we wanted an access path. Charles put his mind to this and sent plans , advice, suggestions, and was delighted when the project was completed!

Charles gave me astronomy lessons, which I pretended to understand. He was too polite to doubt me.

During my last visit to Mountfield, in the autumn, Charles was my companion at the Herstmonceux Medieval Fair. It was a ferociously hot day, but several ice creams helped to keep Charles cool and content . He was very patient with my pottering around the stalls and buying nothing.

Charles also accompanied me to Bodiam Castle, another glorious day. Julie was laid up with a bad leg, hence her absence, but Charles was obviously missing her and was anxious about her.

Julie and Charles, an intrepid pair. On one visit to see us in Scotland, despite shockingly bad weather, they insisted on doing a long walk along the Moray coast, and grinned about it when they returned.

Charles had his foibles, don't we all? We'll miss you Charles, but your kindness, courteous ways and smile will not fade.

With love and affection
